How to Use Bhringraj Powder: Making and Rinsing a Hair Pack
By THENVANAM Editorial ·
In short
To use bhringraj powder: patch test first, then mix about 2 tablespoons of powder with water, aloe vera gel or another suitable base until the pack is smooth. Apply it to hair and scalp section by section, avoiding the eyes, leave it for around 15–30 minutes, and rinse thoroughly before it dries. Mix fresh for each use.

Steps
Patch test first
Mix a pinch of bhringraj powder with the base you plan to use and apply it to a small area of skin. Wait before using it more widely, and do not go ahead if there is any irritation.
Measure and loosen the powder
Take about 2 tablespoons for shoulder-length hair with a dry spoon, adjusting for length and thickness. Break up any small lumps with the back of the spoon, or sieve the powder, before adding liquid.
Stir in the base until smooth
Add water, aloe vera gel or another suitable base gradually, stirring until the pack is smooth with no gritty or dry patches. Aim for a paste that holds on the spoon without dripping.
Apply section by section
Work the pack onto the scalp first, one section at a time, then down the lengths. Keep it away from the eyes and wipe the hairline if any runs down.
Leave it for a set time
Leave the pack on for around 15–30 minutes. Rinse before it dries completely, as a dried pack sheds dark green flakes and is harder to rinse out.
Rinse until clear
Rinse with plenty of lukewarm water, working through the scalp with your fingertips, until the water no longer runs green. Discontinue use if any irritation occurs.
Getting a smooth pack
Bhringraj is ground from the whole herb, so it is a leafier, slightly more fibrous powder than a fruit or flower powder. It wets less readily at first: tip all the liquid in at once and you will be chasing dry pockets around the bowl. Add the base in small amounts and stir each addition in fully before the next.
Aloe vera gel gives the smoothest, most spreadable pack and is the easiest base for long hair. Water works perfectly well but makes a paste that can separate slightly as it stands — give it a quick stir just before you apply it.
Combining bhringraj with other powders
Bhringraj can be used alone, and the bhringraj hair pack recipe does exactly that. It is also the third powder commonly added to a hibiscus and amla pack, in a smaller proportion than the other two. If you combine them, keep hibiscus and amla as the base and add bhringraj on top rather than in equal measure.
Patch test each powder on its own before combining them, so that you know which one is responsible if anything does not agree with your skin.
Rinsing and clean-up
The mixed pack is a very dark green, close to black, and it shows on everything. A little preparation saves most of the clean-up.
- Wear an old dark towel or T-shirt; green marks on pale cotton are hard to shift.
- Rinse at the sink or in the shower rather than over a basin, and run the water until it is clear, not just lighter.
- Wipe tiles, grout and the bowl straight away, before the paste dries on.
- If small green specks remain in the hair once dry, it was under-rinsed — rinse for longer next time.
Key takeaways
- Patch test before first use, in the base you will actually use.
- Add the base gradually — bhringraj wets less readily than flower or fruit powders.
- Start with about 2 tablespoons for shoulder-length hair and adjust.
- Rinse before the pack dries, until the water no longer runs green.
Frequently asked questions
What do I mix bhringraj powder with?
Water, aloe vera gel or another suitable base, as named in the product guidance. Stir until the pack is smooth, then apply.
How much bhringraj powder should I use?
About 2 tablespoons is a reasonable starting point for shoulder-length hair. Longer or thicker hair needs more; mix only what you will use at once.
How long should I leave a bhringraj hair pack on?
Around 15–30 minutes is a practical range. Rinse before it dries completely, because a dried pack flakes and is harder to rinse out.
Why is my bhringraj pack lumpy?
The liquid was probably added too fast. Break up or sieve the dry powder first, then add the base in small amounts, stirring each one in fully.
Can I mix bhringraj with hibiscus and amla?
Yes. It is commonly added to a hibiscus and amla pack in a smaller proportion than the other two. Patch test each powder on its own first.
Can bhringraj powder be eaten?
No. THENVANAM Bhringraj Powder is described for making a hair pack and is for external use only.
